Speaking to The Daily Record, former Rangers ace Barry Ferguson has claimed that Joey Barton is not a Celtic supporter as his move to Ibrox looks set to be completed.
The 33-year-old Burnley midfielder is expected to seal his move to Rangers within the next 24 hours, having agreed personal terms with the Scottish Premiership side (BBC).
Should the transfer materialise, it would represent quite a coup for Rangers boss Mark Warburton, given Barton's stature in the game and vast Premier League experience.
But it has been suggested that the former Newcastle United man has an affinity for Rangers' Old Firm rivals Celtic, but Ferguson, who has spent time with the Liverpudlian, says those rumours are wide of the mark in his experience.
"I had a chuckle when I read Joey Barton was a Celtic fan. If he is then he has kept that one quiet from me," he told the Daily Record.
"I played against Joey a few times and we did the UEFA ‘A’ Licence coaching course together. He’s a great lad and we spoke a lot. I know he has tweeted stuff about Celtic before but there wasn’t a peep about him being a Hoops man to me."
It would be the second midfielder that the Gers have signed this summer if it goes through, following Jordan Rossiter's permanent move from Liverpool earlier this month.
Warburton seems to be building something quite exciting at Rangers. The mood will be low after Saturday's Scottish Cup final defeat by Hibernian, but the future still looks very bright indeed as the club prepares for its return to the big time.
