The Bayern Munich star has been linked with a move to Liverpool for months.

Speaking to Omnisport, reported by FourFourTwo, former Bayern Munich boss Ottmar Hitzfeld has backed the idea of Mario Gotze joining Liverpool this summer.

The Bayern Munich midfielder has been heavily linked with Liverpool this summer, with his future at the German champions looking bleak.

He has struggled to establish himself in the first team under Pep Guardiola, and that looks unlikely to improve when Carlo Ancelotti takes charge this summer.

Indeed, it has been reported that the former Real Madrid boss has told him that he will not be a regular for his side next season.

Talk of a reunion with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool has thus intensified, and Hitzfeld believes that it would be a good move for the midfielder to make.

"When I heard that Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp might be interested I thought that was a good idea,” FourFourTwo reports him saying.

"Mario Gotze would fit in with Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp, who knows Gotze. He would instantly have a relationship of trust, so it would be a win-win-situation."

Should Gotze end up at Liverpool this summer, it would certainly be interesting to see how they would fit him into their side.

They currently have a number of attacking midfielders on their books, with Philippe Coutinho having been forced into a wide left role as a consequence.

Gotze would likely demand a central role should he arrive at Anfield, and how Klopp would fit him in to his side is a fascinating dilemma.
