Karl Darlow wants Newcastle United to make additions

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez

Newcastle United are currently the favourites to earn promotion from the Championship this season.

Karl Darlow has told the Northern Echo that Newcastle United must invest in the summer transfer window if they are to compete in the Championship.

Newcastle are currently the favourites to win the Championship title next season, ahead of the likes of Aston Villa.

However, Darlow feels that his side have work to do if they are to cope with playing in the second tier.

The Championship season is a famously demanding one, and Darlow wants Newcastle to add more depth to their options.

“We might need to add a few because you need a bigger squad,” the goalkeeper said. “The matches take their toll when you’re playing Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday.

“It’ll be interesting to see what happens, but it’s up to the board and the manager to see what they want to do player wise. If we keep the majority of the lads here, I don’t think we’ll have a problem next year.”

One position where Newcastle will not need to strengthen is in goal.

Darlow faces competition for a first-team place with both Tim Krul and Rob Elliot, who both impressed in the Premier League last season.

Newcastle also go into next campaign, with the boost that Rafael Benitez is expected to remain in charge.

Benitez was initially predicted to leave Newcastle if they were relegated, but he is now reportedly ready to commit his future to the Tynesiders.

Benitez is expected to sign a new three-year contract at Newcastle in the coming days.
