As demonstrated in the latest reports from the Daily Star, highly-rated German shot-stopper Karius looks set to join Liverpool this summer in a £4.7 million move from Mainz.
His expected arrival will prompt further questions over the future of Mignolet, a player who has received his fair share of flak ever since moving to the club from Sunderland back in 2013.
James, however, believes the Belgium international remains a very talented goalkeeper and believes a lack of quality coaching has partly been behind his inconsistent performances and high-profile errors.
"I think Mignolet is a very capable goalkeeper. I still think there so much more he can be doing better – but this is a training thing,” James told the Daily Star.
"Perhaps he’s not getting the ideal work done in his coaching, because there’s areas he can improve on. But there’s nothing to say he can’t become a great goalkeeper for Liverpool.”
Jurgen Klopp has on a number of occasions publicly defended Mignolet, and has insisted he has full faith in his goalkeeping abilities, but the impending acquisition of Karius may suggest otherwise.
The 22-year-old has been one of the outstanding goalkeepers in the Bundesliga over the past 12 months, and there has been talk of a potential future call-up in the German national team.
For now it seems that Klopp wants to make sure that Mignolet has a solid number two behind him, but it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see Karious gradually oust the former Sunderland man from the number one spot.
