According to RMC Sport, Arsenal will make an offer for Bayern Munich’s Medhi Benatia this week.
The French publication claims that Arsenal have made the defender their number one priority this summer and they will look to beat off the competition by making their move early.
Manager Arsene Wenger has already allegedly singled out Borussia Monchengladbach’s Granit Xhaka as the man to bulk up the midfield, and now Benatia is being lined up to strengthen the back four.
Arsenal struggled towards the end of last season from a defensive perspective, with Per Mertesacker ageing and Gabrial Paulista still struggling to make his mark in North London.
Benatia, 29, is an experienced defender having played for Roma before moving to Bayern Munich in 2014.
The Morocco international struggled to cement a regular starting place in Bavaria this season, and plenty of questions have been raised over the past few months regarding his future.
Benatia stands at 6ft 3inch and excels at positional play, winning aerial duels and recording interceptions.
During his time at the Allianz Arena, he has helped Pep Guardiola’s side win the past two Bundesliga titles and most recently the German Cup following a penalty shootout victory against Borussia Dortmund.
