Should Leeds move for Robert Green if Marco Silvestri leaves?

Robert Green would become a free agent in the summer after he leaves Queens Park Rangers.

Marco Silvestri is one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship and is a very important player for Leeds United.

The Italian has been on the books of Leeds since 2014 and has a contract until June 2018.

According to a recent report in the print edition of The Sun (May 8, click here to read more), the 25-year-old could leave the West Yorkshire outfit in the summer transfer window.

The goalkeeper, though, has since suggested on Twitter that he will be at Elland Road next season, but in football nothing can be guaranteed.

What if Silvestri leaves Leeds in the summer? Who should the club sign as a replacement?

Former West Ham United goalkeeper Robert Green would be a very good candidate for a number of reasons.

Green would become a free agent at the end of next month when his current contract with Queens Park Rangers runs out.

The Englishman has not been given a new deal, and he will be searching for a club. This means that Leeds would not have to pay any transfer fee, and they would get a proven and experienced goalkeeper.

Green knows the Premier League and the Championship inside out, and his experience would be very important in the Whites’ quest to finish in the top six of the Championship next season.

The 36-year-old has not played a competitive game since January 1, but he remains fit and ready for a new challenge.

The former Norwich City goalkeeper could find a club in the Premier League, but would he be guaranteed a regular starting place there?

Probably not.

Signing Green on a one-year contract would allow Leeds to fill the gap left by Silvestri - if the Italian does leave - and it would also allow youngster Bailey Peacock-Farrell to get more chances than he would if the Whites recruited a big-name goalkeeper in his prime.
