Neil hoping to keep O'Neil and Whittaker at Norwich

Both players are out of contract this summer, but Neil is keen to keep the duo at Carrow Road.

Norwich City boss Alex Neil has told the Eastern Daily Press that he is hoping to keep Gary O'Neil and Steven Whittaker at the club, as they look to mount a promotion challenge in the Championship next season.

Both players are out of contract at Carrow Road next month and had initially looked set to leave the club, but Neil is now keen to seal new deals for the duo.

Whittaker's last appearance for City came in the 1-1 League Cup draw at Everton in October, while O'Neil made 37 appearances in all competitions.

And Neil, whose own future has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks, believes that securing the services of both players will be a top priority in preparing his side for another season in the second tier.

He said: “We’re in the process of talking to both [players]. If it makes sense for them and the club that is something we can look at.

"Steven is a proven Championship player and did well for us and Gary has had a really good season and contributed probably a lot more than what we thought, based on the season before last.

The Scot continued by stating that efforts to assess the whole of his squad had already begun.

He added: "I have had a conversation with all the players and they all know their individual situation.”

Nevertheless, the club may face a battle to keep hold of their star performers this summer, with speculation around midfielder Nathan Redmond already continuing to build.
