The Southampton striker has been linked with a summer move to Anfield for a reported fee of up to £25 million.
With Jurgen Klopp's first summer transfer window as Liverpool manager rapidly approaching, speculation has already begun to surface about who he will look to bring to Anfield in the next few months.
One reports which has emerged in recent days is that linking Southampton striker Shane Long to the Reds, who are said to be fighting Leicester City for the Irishman's signature.
Long enjoyed the best season of his career for five years this term, scoring 13 goals in all competitions for the Saints as well as netting three for the Republic of Ireland as he helped them qualify for Euro 2016.
However, the striker will turn 30 halfway through next season, and Klopp already has Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi, Roberto Firmino, Danny Ings, and Christian Benteke at his disposal in attack.
Even despite the injury worries of Sturridge, Origi, and Ings, and the fact that Benteke seems almost certain to be sold this summer, the Reds appear to be far from paper-thin up front.
One huge concern for Liverpool fans regarding the report will be the suggestion that Southampton and their manager Ronald Koeman could look for around £25 million to part with Long this summer.
Reds supporters will be seriously worried about seeing their club get their fingers burnt again after the failed experiment of paying £32.5 million to bring Benteke to Anfield, and they made their reservations known in no uncertain terms on Twitter.
If Liverpool even bid £25 million in the summer for Shane Long then somebody needs to get fired. I hope this is just a random rumour.— Richard (@rpenners1) May 22, 2016
There's no way this Shane Long thing is real. Come on now.— Stü (@strtbrdsn) May 22, 2016
Klopp if you magically see this DONT BUY SHANE LONG PLEASE— BootsOnTheGroundKarl (@Karlo_TD) May 22, 2016

Clearly the #lfc transfer committee have some form of love in over Shane Long. Linked with him every summer. He is bang average.— Tom (@Tom_S_1986) May 22, 2016

so it begins, the expectations of signing Götze but then now we're being linked with Shane Long #LFC— Jack Fenney (@Jack_Fenney) May 22, 2016
I hope the rumours about Shane Long are not true. Can't deal with that.— The Anfield Truth (@TheAnfieldTruth) May 22, 2016
Shane Long is the level of signing that got Roy Hodgson his #LFC reputation and the sack. Surely the club has moved on from that level?— William Gaywood (@FirBob22) May 22, 2016
However, other fans were not as averse to the idea, and suggested that the Reds could do worse than bring Long to the club as another option in attack, although the reported price remained an understandable sticking point.
Id actually be happy with Shane Long— Captain Mersey (@jackmanning000) May 22, 2016
If Liverpool are signing Shane Long as a squad player then it's good business. But you don't win stuff with Shane Long leading the line— Danny (@DannyM__MCFC) May 22, 2016
Sturridge, Origi, Shane Long and Ings is brilliant for me. I'd take that. No injuries and we're laughing.— Adam (@AdamdodaDay) May 22, 2016
The main man being Origi for me.
Honestly would have shane long play alongside sturridge, would work perfectly since sturridge isnt an engine up front— Aufa (@aufaghifari) May 22, 2016
I'd love Shane Long at Liverpool only because he's Irish and I love him No more than £15m though— Evan (@SimplyJurgen) May 22, 2016
Shane Long is actually really underrated is it just me who wouldn't mind him as back up or partnered Sturridge??— Haaris (@harry78615) May 22, 2016
