Barcelona outcast Martin Montoya would be a superb addition for West Ham

West Ham United need to bring in a new right-back this summer and one man who certainly fits the bill is Barcelona’s out of favour fullback Martin Montoya.

The Barcelona academy graduate has spent the past few months out on loan at Real Betis, making 13 La Liga appearances and averaging an impressive 3.2 tackles and 3.3 interceptions per league match.

According to a recent report in Mundo Deportivo, Montoya will not be staying at Betis beyond his loan spell as the Spanish club need to make some cutbacks and can’t afford the player’s wages.

The 25-year-old is a very capable player, and it wasn’t too long ago that he was heavily linked with a number of big Premier League clubs before having a short spell in Italy with Inter Milan.

West Ham have enjoyed a terrific campaign this past season, finishing in a respectable seventh position and thus putting themselves in a position to qualify for next season’s edition of the Europa League.

With the club set to move in to the Olympic Stadium, the club is really bouncing at present and the owners have already made some big statements ahead of potential mouthwatering signings this summer.

While a big-money striker has been sounded out, another key area to strengthen for the Hammers is at right-back as over the past few months winger Michail Antonio has fulfilled that role.

Antonio has been excellent, but he is naturally a winger and arguably his best work is going forward.

Montoya is more defensive-minded, and with his future at Barcelona largely in the balance, West Ham could strike themselves a potential bargain by bringing him to East London this summer.

The former Spain U23 international will only leave the Nou Camp for a big club, and there is no doubt that West Ham now fall into that category as they will look to challenge for the top four next season.
