Report: Newcastle United interested in QPR defender Steven Caulker

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Steven Caulker from Queens Park Rangers in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United are interested in signing Steven Caulker in the summer transfer window, according to The Shields Gazette.

Caulker is on the books of Championship club Queens Park Rangers at the moment, and his current contract with the London outfit runs until June 2018.

The 24-year-old central defender has been on the books of QPR since 2014, but he was out on loan this past season.

The England international played on loan for Southampton during the first half of the 2015-16 campaign before joining Premier League rivals Liverpool in the January transfer window.

Caulker struggled for playing time for the Saints and the Reds, but Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez wants to sign the centre-back in the summer, according to The Shields Gazette.

Move feasible?

Caulker does have experience of playing in the Championship from a loan spell at Bristol City, but it will be interesting to see if QPR sell him to Newcastle.

Rangers will be aiming to finish in the top six of the Championship next season, and so will Newcastle, who got relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
