Ray Wilkins has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 19th May, that he believes Newcastle United will bounce straight back from relegation, but he is less confident about Aston Villa’s chances.
Newcastle and Villa were both relegated from the Premier League this past season, after enduring miserable campaigns.
Villa were rock bottom for much of the season, while Newcastle just could not do enough to get out of the bottom three.
And Wilkins feels that the two sides will fare differently in the Championship next term.
“I think it’s going to take a couple of years for Villa to get promoted, but I see Newcastle bouncing back,” Wilkins said.
Newcastle are currently the favourites to be promoted from the Championship, as they look set to keep hold of Rafael Benitez.
The Spanish boss has sparked an improvement in Newcastle since taking charge, and his commitment for the future would be a major boost for the Tynesiders.
Villa, meanwhile, are set to undergo a summer of massive change, but they are likely to have funds to spend.
Villa are on the verge of a long-awaited takeover, and supporters of the Midlands finally have something to be excited about - after being starved of success in recent years.
