Di Matteo is expected to be announced as Villa boss in the coming days, as the Midlands club prepare for life in the Championship.
Wilkins believes that Di Matteo will be a good fit at Villa Park, as he knows the area well.
“I know Roberto,” Wilkins said. “He loves his football and he’s very good at it. I think he’ll do very well there. He’s from the area and lives up there, so that will be a big plus.
“I hope he goes in there and gets it going because it’s a fabulous club.”
Di Matteo is expected to have a major rebuilding job on his hands at Villa, with a range of departures expected following their relegation.
Villa are set to offload the bulk of their current squad, and Wilkins believes that Di Matteo needs to ensure that their replacements are British based.
“It’s a massive job,” Wilkins added. “I think Roberto has to try and go British. When you’re in the Championship you need British players.”
Villa are set to have money to spend in the summer transfer window, as they are in the process of undergoing a takeover.
Dr Tony Xia has agreed to buy the Midlands club for £60 million, and he has already expressed a desire to help them make it back into the Premier League and eventually start challenging for Europe.
