Neil Warnock responds when asked whether he would like to replace Benitez at Newcastle

Neil Warnock Runs Onto The Pitch

Neil Warnock has joked that he would take the Newcastle job - for less money than Rafael Benitez.

Manager Neil Warnock has been quoted by The Northern Echo as saying that he would happily take the Newcastle job for £1m-a-year less than Rafael Benitez.

Warnock, 67, has had a long managerial career with 14 different clubs, but is now a free agent having left Rotherham United on Wednesday.

Warnock kept the Millers in the Championship with a stunning run of form to end the season, and Rotherham unsurprisingly wanted to keep hold of him beyond the summer.

However, a breakdown in talks means that Warnock is without a club again - but has been linked with a shock move to Newcastle United.

The Mirror reported over the weekend that Warnock was a contender for the Newcastle United job if their manager Rafael Benitez invokes a break clause and leaves the club this summer.

Now, despite suffering relegation to the Championship, Benitez - who left Real Madrid in January - looks set to stay at Newcastle and help them recover and push for promotion next season.

Warnock has though been asked about the speculation, and is quoted by The Northern Echo as saying that he can't see Benitez rejecting the chance to stay at Newcastle for £5m-a-year, but the Spaniard did leave Tyneside, he joked that he would happily take the job for £1m-a-year less!

"I don’t think he’ll turn it down for £5m a year," said Warnock. "But if he does, I’d do it for £4m!" he added, before claiming that this isn't the end of his managerial career just yet.

Would you want Warnock at Newcastle if Benitez leaves?
