Payet has been the star of the show for West Ham United this past season.
Payet joined West Ham from Marseille in the summer transfer window after impressing for the French side.
He proved to be a superb acquisition, as he became the star of the show at Upton Park in a highly impressive first season at the club.
Of such quality were his performances; he was named in the PFA Team of the Year, beating off competition from Arsenal star Mesut Ozil for his place.
And when asked to name their Premier League signing of the season, both Nicholas and Thompson were quick to select Payet.
“It's Dimitri Payet without a doubt. He's transformed West Ham,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“N'Golo Kante would be in there but I think Payet has just been incredible. The modern version of Paolo Di Canio but without the histrionics.”
“I'm more attack minded and there's something sensational about a player that can do what he does. He's made West Ham believe again,” added Nicholas.
Merson meanwhile, decided that the award would have to be shared with another Frenchman, Leicester City midfielder N’Golo Kante.
“For me, Dimitri Payet and N'Golo Kante can share it. West Ham took a chance on Payet, who was 29. Kante has had a brilliant season at Leicester, one of their best players,” he said.
West Ham, and Payet, will now be hoping that he can continue to shine for the Hammers next season.
There is no denying he is now their key player, and they will need him at his best once again if they are to impress as they have done this season.
