Early look: The best and worst possible Champions League groups Tottenham Hotspur could draw in 2016/17

Confirmed as third seeds, who could Tottenham draw in the Champions League next season?

Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League efforts this season saw them finally rewarded with a Champions League place after finishing third.

The club have had a few near misses in recent years, and are desperate to resume their love for the competition which saw them reach the quarter-finals under Harry Redknapp, beating AC Milan along the way.

There are still several rounds of qualifying to be played before the group stage draw is made, and not all teams are assured of their places. Spurs can sit back however, granted automatic qualification.

What we do know is that if Celtic make it into the group stages, they will be in UEFA's Pot Three, report ESPN.

Here is a look at the best and worst possible groups they could draw if they get there...

Best case scenario: Benfica, Bayer Leverkusen, Tottenham Hotspur, Viktoria Plzen

Worst case scenario: Bayern Munich, Napoli, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid (loser of this week's final)

The best case is not too daunting at all, with the best teams they could draw from Pot One being either Benfica, or the winners of the Russian Premier League, CSKA Moscow or FC Rostov, although the long travel would not be ideal.

Leverkusen are not a scary side to face either, while they could hope to draw a relative minnow from Pot Four.

The worst case would provide some outstanding ties and the chance for Tottenham to test themselves against the very best, but it would dampen their chances of getting out of the group stages.

The loser of this week's Champions League final between Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid will drop into the fourth pot, ensuring a nasty surprise in one group, while this is also where Celtic would feature if they get through the qualifying rounds.
