Boudewijn Zenden urges Sunderland to invest in the summer

Sunderland are expected to invest heavily in the summer transfer window.

Boudewijn Zenden has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, which was broadcast on 19th May, that Sunderland’s board have to invest to ‘fix’ the side for next season.

Sunderland narrowly avoided relegation yet again this term, with Sam Allardyce guiding the North East club to a miraculous escape from the drop.

However, Zenden has urged his former side not to stand still, and he wants to see Sunderland show some ambition in the transfer market.

“He [Allardyce] got them out of a ditch,” Zenden said. “They were there and looking over their shoulders for a long period of the season, but to be safe and stay up is a big achievement.

“They now have to go to the board and fix up the team.”

Sunderland have been perennial relegation strugglers for some time, and there is now a realisation that they simply cannot afford to keep putting their Premier League status is jeopardy.

Allardyce has already stated that Sunderland cannot keep celebrating narrowly avoiding the drop, and he wants to push the Wearsiders up the table next season.

The Black Cats are expected to have money to spend, and Allardyce has already proven his astuteness in the transfer market during his time at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland’s January additions were a major reason why they were able to avoid the drop, and Allardyce will be hoping the players he recruits in the summer can be similarly as effective.
