Boudewijn Zenden: Newcastle United will find Championship life tough

Newcastle United are currently the bookies' favourites to win the Championship title.

Boudewijn Zenden has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, which was broadcast on 19th May, that Newcastle United could find it tough to bounce straight back from relegation.

Newcastle are currently the favourites to win the Championship next season, with a sense of optimism being felt around St. James’ Park.

The Magpies are believed to be likely to keep hold of current manager Rafael Benitez, and they have also expressed a desire to keep the bulk of their squad together.

Newcastle are widely expected to go straight back up if they are able to keep hold of Benitez, but Zenden feels their task could be more difficult than predicted.

Zenden feels that Newcastle may find it difficult to keep hold of their better players, and he expects the transition to Championship life to be a difficult one.

“When a team goes down, it’s very hard to jump back straight away,” Zenden said.

“Maybe Benitez feels that he has the ability to build something, but when you play in the Championship it’s tough. Plus, you have have to be able to persuade the bigger and better players to stay. That’s not always the case.”

Benitez was widely expected to leave Newcastle when their relegation was confirmed.

However, the Spanish boss has been taken aback by the support he has received at St. James’ Park, and he has reportedly held positive talks with Mike Ashley regarding his future.

Newcastle are also believed to be determined to keep hold of many of their key players, with the North East side eager to get back to the top tier as quickly as possible.
