Tottenham fans react on Twitter as Federico Fazio collects Europa League medal

Federico Fazio will return to Tottenham with a medal in his pocket.

Tottenham Hotspur fell short in their pursuit of silverware this season despite an impressive campaign.

So it is an odd twist that one member of the first team squad who has picked up a medal is a player deemed not good enough for the club, Federico Fazio.

Fazio received a Europa League winner's medal as Sevilla beat Liverpool, even though he was not even named on the substitute's bench.

The centre-back was loaned back to the La Liga side in January, and did not cover himself in glory as he was sent off on his first game back.

He made only four league appearances for Sevilla, but did play a part in their Europa League run to the final, playing in two matches, for 90 minutes of a 1-0 loss to Molde - which still saw them progress to the next phase - and for 78 minutes of a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao.

Fazio was one of Mauricio Pochettino's early signings at Spurs, but the fact the head coach signed two more centre bacs last summer spelled the end for him after just one season, and he was allowed to leave mid-season after being surplus to requirements as fourth choice.

The Argentine's future is unclear, but the fact he is a Europa League winner for the second time in three years with Sevilla could potentially add a little to his price tag, music to Spurs chairman Daniel Levy's ears.

Tottenham fans did not know quite what to make of him stepping up to collect his medal in Basel last night. Here is a look at the reaction via Twitter...
