According to a report from the Chronicle, Kevin Mbabu will know his future by Friday.
Mbabu was signed by Newcastle United from Swiss side Servette in January 2013 and there was a lot of optimism that the young defender would go on to become a first team regular at St. James’ Park.
As it turned out though, Mbabu struggled to make any impact whatsoever at Newcastle and did not make a single first team appearance in his first two seasons at the club.
The 21-year-old was finally handed his debut by former manager Steve McClaren during the season that has just passed and while the left back did impress initially, a long-term groin injury meant that he was limited to only four appearances throughout the course of the campaign.
With Newcastle being relegated to the Championship, it is expected that the club will look to adopt a cost cutting plan by offloading a number of players to reduce the wage bill and Mbabu is believed to be one of the squad members whose future at St. James’ Park is in doubt, especially with his contract expiring in June.
Nevertheless, Mbabu is keen on a stay at Newcastle and according to reports from the Chronicle, it has been claimed that the Magpies are set to decide whether or not to extend the Swiss youngster’s contract by the end of the week.
