Report: Gokhan Gonul will join Besiktas, not West Ham, this summer

The Turkish right-back was linked with a move to West Ham recently.

Reports in Turkey today are suggesting that West Ham United have missed out on the transfer of a Turkish international.

The player in question is 31-year-old Turkish international Gokhan Gonul.

The Fenerbahce defender has, according to Ajansspor, decided to join Istanbul rivals and Slaven Bilic’s former team Besiktas instead – turning down interest from the Croatian and West Ham.

Sabah reported last month that Gonul is hoping to make a move away from Turkey this summer. West Ham were said to be keen on the player, who reportedly impressed Bilic during his time managing at Besiktas.

Gonul has over 50 caps for Turkey and has been a regular at Fenerbahce since joining the club from Hacettepe in 2007.

A right-back, his arrival would have been welcomed by West Ham fans – as they have found themselves slightly light in the position recently.

Sam Byram is still an unproven quantity at this level and the likes of James Tomkins and Michail Antonio have played well when asked to play the position. Meanwhile Joey O’Brien is out of contract this summer.

A right-back remains a likely transfer target, but it appears Gonul will not be the man to plug this problem position.
