Rangers boss Mark Warburton has told Sky Sports News, which was broadcast on 18th May, that Joey Barton has plenty of other options, even though he is keen to bring the midfielder to Ibrox.
Barton has been targeted by Rangers to be one of their first signings, as they build a squad capable of competing in the Scottish Premiership.
The Glasgow side currently have a very young team, and Warburton has identified Barton as a player who could be a steadying influence on the squad.
Rangers have reportedly offered Barton a three-year deal (Sky Sports), but the 33-year-old is yet to make his mind up in his future.
And Warburton said: “There’s no secrets in Glasgow. He’s a talented individual and he offers experience and maturity.
“I’m sure he has many options, all we can try and do is show him what Rangers represents and the opportunity it represents.”
Warburton was not quite as open when asked to provide an update on his side’s chase of Niko Kranjcar.
The Croatian international has been said to be on the verge of a move to Rangers, but Warburton would not confirm his side’s interest.
“In Glasgow you are linked to many players,” the former Brentford boss added. “There’s lot of options we are looking at, but we would never comment on individual players. We have to get the balance right.”
Rangers absolutely dominated the Scottish Championship this season, and there is great optimism for how they will compete in the top tier again next term.
Warburton has been keen to curb expectations so far, though, with a lot of work still to be done on enhancing his side’s squad this summer.
