Mick Quinn has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 18th May, that Andros Townsend’s future at Newcastle United depends on whether Rafael Benitez gets the job.
Townsend has been linked with a host of clubs since Newcastle were relegated from the Premier League.
The 24-year-old winger has been in fine form since moving to St. James’ Park from Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window, and he was one of Newcastle’s best performers towards the end of the campaign.
Townsend scored four goals in 12 Premier League appearances for the Magpies, and he proved that he still had a role to play for a top flight club.
Newcastle will be determined to keep hold of the winger, however, and Quinn believes that they have a chance as long as Benitez stays.
“If Rafael Benitez is there, he stays,” Quinn said. “I really do think it’s as simple as that.”
Benitez was expected to leave Newcastle after they were relegated, but it now seems that he may stay.
Benitez is yet to commit his future to Newcastle, but he is believed to have held positive talks with Mike Ashley recently.
