Report: Valencia contacted Rafa Benitez about potential return

It is as yet unknown if Benitez will stay at Newcastle United beyond this season.

Valencia contacted Rafa Benitez to see if he would be interested in a return, but the talks came to nothing, according to Spanish media outlet Deporte Valenciano.

Benitez is currently at Newcastle United, having replaced Steve McClaren at the helm back in March.

As yet it is unknown whether he will stay at St James’ Park following their relegation though, as he has a break clause in his current contract with the Magpies.

It is believed he will not fancy managing in the second division of English football, although recent reports suggest he may be tempted to stay at the club.

And Valencia have already tried to take advantage of that uncertainty by contacting their former manager about a potential return.

Unfortunately for them the talks did not come to anything, according to the report from Deporte Valenciano, with it claiming the Spaniard has set his mind on Newcastle instead.

That will come as a boost for Magpies, who will be keen to see Benitez stay and build on the job doe already, hopefully guiding them to an instant return to the Premier League next season.
