Danny Murphy predicts how Newcastle would fare under Benitez next season

Newcastle United have been relegated from the Premier League and will play in the Championship next season.

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy predicted on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Monday morning (broadcast from 6am, May 16) that Newcastle United would get promoted from the Championship straightaway if Rafael Benitez remains in charge.

Newcastle have been relegated from the Premier League and will play in the Championship next season.

It remains to be seen if Benitez, who has managed Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid in his career, will remain at St. James’ Park next season.

Murphy said that if the Spaniard stays at Newcastle, then he would bet on the Magpies to get promoted from the Championship.

“If he (Benitez) stays, I would have a good few quid on them coming straight back up,” on the former England international midfielder on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Monday morning (broadcast from 6am, May 16).

“I really would because I know what he is like in terms of getting his squad fit. You need that in the Championship.

"He knows the English leagues. He has got loads of contacts in this country, so he won’t struggle to attract players there.”

Benitez does not have experience of managing in the Championship, but the achievement of Aitor Karanka at Middlesbrough and Carlos Carvalhal at Sheffield Wednesday this season is proof that a manager does not need to have worked in the second tier of English football to be successful in the division.

It could take some time for the former Valencia boss to get used to the rigours of the Championship, but the fans should be optimistic about the team’s chances of promotion under him.
