The Toon Army made it clear they want Benitez to stick around.
The result was a massive shock considering that Newcastle were already relegated and that Tottenham were going for second placed in the league.
Newcastle ran rampant against Spurs and won comfortably against all the odds and the atmosphere at the ground was fascinating.
Despite their relegation Newcastle fans were universally popular as they pleaded with manager Rafa Benitez to stay at the club. The Spaniard has a relegation exit clause in his contract and can leave this summer if he chose to.
But given the way he was treated by the fans on Sunday that will now doubt be a tough decision. Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, who found himself in a similar position as Benitez when managing Newcastle in 2009, had this to say about the reception for Benitez in his Coral blog today:
"If Rafa wanted any questions answered on whether they want him to stay or not, then he certainly got his answer.
"I mean 50,000 screaming Geordies asking a manager to stay is just incredible.
"Rafa knows the size of the club, he knows the passion of the fans, but I’d be very surprised if he was still the manager at the beginning of next season."
Benitez came into a tough situation at St James’ Park as Newcastle had already been struggling to find any sort of form before his arrival.
They are currently unbeaten in six games, representing their best record since 2014, and will feel that Benitez is the man to lead them back to the top-flight after their recent form.
