Arsenal finished second in the table, but improvement is still needed.
Arsenal enjoyed themselves on the final day of the season as a win over Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur’s shock loss to Newcastle United, saw them finish second in the table.
Despite that success, their season must be viewed as a failure as they have not won the title despite their main rivals all having struggled.
There has been much criticism aimed their way as a result, with the suggestion being that they are lacking the mental toughness that is required.
And Smith admits that is the hurdle they must overcome in future as they have fluffed their lines at the vital times.
“It is amazing that they have finished above Spurs,” he told Sky Sports.
“But there will be a feeling of disappointment because this was a great chance for them and they fluffed their lines at the vital times. That is the hurdle they have to get over now.”
If Arsenal are to compete for honours next season, then much will rest on the work they can do in the summer transfer window.
A world-class striker will surely be top of their wish list, with that area of the team having been where they have struggled once again.
It is not the only area needing improvement though, with there being a belief that central defence is another area that Arsene Wenger should look to add in.
