Villa have won just three Premier League matches all season, and they finished the campaign stuck at the foot of the table.
The Claret and Blues only picked up 17 points in 38 matches, and three different managers failed to spark them into life.
"It's just not been good enough from Villa,” Merson said. “It's as simple as that. Everything that could have gone wrong for the club has gone wrong. A disaster from start to finish!”
Villa’s players’ attitudes have been called into question this season, as they have shown a lack of fight in a large amount of matches.
The Claret and Blues have had a tendency to capitulate when put under pressure, and they have given their supporters very little to cheer.
Villa now are building for the Championship, with big changes expected to happen over the summer.
The Midlands side are looking for a new manager, while many of the squad are expected to move on.
Nigel Pearson remains amongst the favourites to land the permanent job at Villa Park.
