Loris Karius deal close: Liverpool on verge of completing the bargain of the transfer window before it even opens

Liverpool are close to signing Loris Karius, according to reports.

Liverpool are on the verge of signing German goalkeeper Loris Karius from Mainz, Kicker report.

The German news outlet claim the Reds have agreed a deal with the Bundesliga side, who will 'almost certainly' leave the club.

Karius is known to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who keeps a close eye on Mainz, the club who gave him his first break in management before Borussia Dortmund.

The Mirror report Karius could cost as little as £4.7 million, a snip for a player who could become a first choice goalkeeper.

Bargain of the summer

A star goalkeeper is hard to find, as Liverpool have experienced in recent years. Simon Mignolet has been solid enough, but he is not regarded in the top tier even in the Premier League, let alone Europe.

Karius has the potential to be a star, and would come into compete with Mignolet straight away, potentially taking his spot.

The 22-year-old has almost 100 appearances in the Bundesliga to his name already, and is a German under-21 international.

Dislodging countryman Manuel Neuer is a little of an impossible task, but if he can get anywhere near in terms of the quality of the German number one then Liverpool are onto a winner.

Karius is physically imposing, and has a real desire to keep the ball out of his net. That can be seen with this remarkable save below, made against Borussia Moenchengladbach in late March.

Karius will find Liverpool a different challenge to Mainz, with the pressure at Anfield likely to test him to the limit.

If he can handle it, then at just £4.7 million he will prove to be one of the signings of the summer, and as far as bargains go, clubs will have their work cut out matching Liverpool's early transfer efforts.
