Kevin Wimmer reflects on defeat at the weekend.
Tottenham's bid to finish second collapsed at the final hurdle on Sunday, but it was not the season implosion some have made it out to be.
While they depressingly slipped below bitter rivals Arsenal once again, qualification for Champions League football was the goal at the start of the season, and that was achieved with plenty to spare.
One of the stars of the campaign who did not feature at the weekend was Kevin Wimmer, who sent a message to supporters yesterday thanking them for backing the team through the season, also acknowledging the fact the campaign did not end well.
Wimmer, unlike those on the pitch or suspended on Sunday, can hold his head high because he was simply left out, with Mauricio Pochettino choosing to revert to playing Jan Vertonghen alongside Toby Alderweireld when he returned from injury.
While there were no immediate repercussions of Wimmer being left out, it is fair to wonder if the season would have ended differently had he been allowed to simply carry on.
A seemingly forgotten summer signing from Wimmer was brought into the side in late January when Vertonghen got inured, and showed he had simply been patiently biding his chance.
He struck up an instant partnership with Alderweireld, with the duo particularly outstanding in the win away to Manchester City.
Wimmer showed no problems adapting to the Premier League, and it is no exaggeration to call him the top flight's best third choice centre-back, based on this season's performances.
Tottenham's late collapse has made it easier to second guess Mauricio Pochettino's decisions, and several fans responded to Wimmer's post by calling out the Argentine's selection, insisting the team were worse off with Vertonghen and the Austrian should never have been dropped.
Here is a look at the selection...
