John Boyega speaks about Star Wars Episode VIII; hints at things to come

Star Wars returns for its latest instalment in 2017.

Star Wars actor John Boyega has been speaking to Variety about the upcoming Episode VIII.

Boyega was one of the breakout stars of 2015, his portrayal of Finn instantly earning him a legion of fans along with plaudits from audiences and critics alike.

The previous instalment in the Star Wars franchise, The Force Awakens, restored many people’s faith in a series that had grown stale following the lacklustre at best prequels, so hopes are high for director Rian Johnson’s movie which is released in 2017.

While details about the next film are understandably sparse, Boyega told Variety just enough to ensure fans will be excited about the prospect of what is to come.

Speaking about the relationship between Finn and Daisy Ridley’s Rey, Boyega said, “Finn is a storm trooper, so he doesn’t really know what’s going on. So the romance thing is something that’s going to be interesting in the next instalment. It’s not going to go the way you think it’s going to go.”

Boyega clearly has the hang of teasing us, and those few lines are sure to have the internet full of speculative articles about what he may or not mean about the future of Finn and Rey’s relationship...which for now remains purely platonic.

Boyega also spoke about working with Johnson, who took over from J.J. Abrams after the mastermind behind Alias and Lost directed Episode VII.

“It’s a different take, darker, bigger,” he said. “Someone will say: ‘How do you get bigger than Force Awakens?’ But it’s crazy.”
