Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports News, which was broadcast on 16th May, that Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez could potentially be a candidate to replace Southampton manager Ronald Koeman, if he moves to Everton.
Koeman has been said to be on Everton’s wishlist, although the Dutch manager is currently insisting that he is happy at St. Mary’s.
Benitez’s future at Newcastle is also up in the air, following the North East side’s relegation to the Championship.
Benitez has a clause in his contract which means that he is free to look for another job, now Newcastle have dropped out of the second tier.
As yet, the Spaniard has not confirmed whether he will be leaving St. James’ Park, but Carragher feels that the former Real Madrid manager would be inclined to leave if a Premier League team comes in for him.
“In all honesty, I think if he got the offer of a Premier League job he’d take it,” he said. “There’s the Everton one at the moment, that may be difficult for him.
“But there’s talk of Ronald Koeman being the man for Everton. If that was the case, Southampton would be available and Rafa could be keeping his options open.”
Koeman is believed to be one of Everton’s top targets this summer, alongside Frank De Boer.
Benitez has also been linked with the Toffees job, but because of his close connections with Liverpool it is doubtful whether he would make the switch to Goodison Park.
