Tottenham Hotspur ended up finishing the season in third place in the Premier League table.

Danny Murphy has told Match of the Day that Tottenham Hotspur fans should be ‘overjoyed’ about their season, despite a disappointing finish.

Spurs had looked to be on course to finish ahead of Arsenal for only the second time in the Premier League era this term.

However, the Lilywhites failed to win any of their last four matches and ended up slipping below their North London rivals.

Tottenham lost 5-1 to Newcastle United yesterday, while Arsenal beat Aston Villa 4-0 to steal second place.

And Murphy said: “When you lose Alli and Dembele in midfield you lose the legs and the power. They have been a big miss.

“Overall, let’s get to the bottom of it, Tottenham fans must be overjoyed. They have got to the Champions League, they have given Leicester a go in the title race and they have a fantastic season to look forward to.”

Spurs had looked to be in with a chance of winning the Premier League title only last month, but after Leicester City’s success was mathematically confirmed Mauricio Pochettino’s side struggled to maintain their focus.

Tottenham could not pick themselves up for their closing matches, and their campaign finished in disappointing style.

Spurs can still look back at the overall campaign with a lot of pride, though, as they have made significant progress.

Tottenham have qualified for the Champions League, and they will be looking to protect their place in the top four for the years to come now.
