Karl Robinson has emerged as the bookies favourite to land the Leeds United job, with SkyBet pricing him at 8/11 on.
Robinson is currently the MK Dons boss, and last week spoke of his disappointment at failing to convince striker Nicky Maynard to return to the club for another year.
"That shows you the type of quality he possesses. He would have been the best and most efficient striker in League One."
Maynard is a free agent, having signed only a one year deal with MK Dons, and is taking his time to explore his options.
A move to a Championship side would be a desired outcome, and if Robinson takes the job at Leeds United, he could stand a pretty good chance of persuading Maynard to join him on board.
Maynard failed to earn a deal at Nottingham Forest last summer after a trial, having been released by Cardiff City after struggling for form and fitness.
He has got his career back on track under Robinson's tutelage, and would have been likely to stay had they retained their Championship status.
Nine goals was enough in all competitions to make him MK Dons' top goalscorer - a figure which would have made him Leeds' second highest goalscorer level with Mirco Antenucci, behind Chris Wood (13).
Antenucci is leaving Leeds on a free this summer, and Maynard could potentially replace his goal output, and also has Premier League experience with West Ham.
Robinson may provide their best chance of landing him if they appoint him in place of Steve Evans, a move the bookies suggest is likely.
