Newcastle United won their final match of the season 5-1 at St. James' Park.
Newcastle picked up a highly impressive 5-1 victory against Spurs yesterday, despite being reduced to 10 men in the second half - after Aleksandar Mitrovic was sent off.
Newcastle’s performance in the match caught the eye, and the scoreline did not flatter the North East side.
However, Shearer has asked why Newcastle did not show so much fight earlier on in the season, when they still had a chance of surviving.
“Very good performance and a superb victory, but you have to ask where have those players been also season,” Shearer questioned.
“For the vast majority of the season if they had shown as much commitment as they did today - you see players shouting a screaming when they scored goals - where have they been all season?”
Newcastle’s relegation was confirmed last week, after Sunderland managed to pick up a victory over Everton.
The Magpies’ win over Spurs has only gone to highlight how different things might have been if they had appointed Rafael Benitez earlier.
The Spaniard has made a major impact on Tyneside, and his future now remains in the balance.
Newcastle fans are desperate for Benitez to stay on as manager, but it remains to be seen whether he will be willing to drop into the Championship.
