Tony Pulis was keen to remind West Brom fans that this season has been a success after their final game of the season, pointing out Aston Villa's relegation.
Pulis, speaking to the club's official website, said that Premier League survival is an achievement to be proud of, especially as they are now the only Midlands side in the top flight.
Villa were relegated this season with a disastrously low points total, amassing just three wins.
Baggies boss Pulis is keen to spend the extra television money coming into the Premier League and believe if they do, then they can kick on.
He said: "We need to improve in lots of areas and, with the extra revenue coming in, we'll do our best to get the players in that we need. The club and team does need just that little bit more.
"The great thing is - we're still in the Premier League. And if you look around this area, we're the only ones in it."
West Brom finished 14th in the league, and can look down with superiority at the Midlands trio in the Championship who have each featured in the top flight over the past decade, Villa, Birmingham City, and Wolves.
A desire to finish above a local rival can be an important factor to drive a team on, and West Brom will hope the rivalry is one that long-term, they do not miss.
As Pulis points out it is important they focus on themselves and where they can strengthen. While 14th, they were just six points clear of relegated Newcastle. If they can accomplish a top 10 finish next season then it will be sizeable progress.
