According to the Daily Star, Roberto Di Matteo is keen on becoming Aston Villa’s new manager.
The report claims that the former Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion boss is keen for a return to management following his departure from Schalke and sees Villa as the ideal opportunity.
Di Matteo has a fairly decent CV when it comes to management, guiding the Baggies to promotion before winning the Champions League and FA Cup while in charge of Chelsea on a short-term deal.
The former Italy international midfielder has been out of a job since resigning from Schalke after a sixth-place finish in the Bundesliga last season, and now he is ready to make a return.
Villa have endured a terrible campaign in the Premier League, resulting in relegation to the Championship.
While the club have been on a steady decline for a number of years now, key boardroom changes have been made in recent months and relegation could at least give the opportunity of a fresh start.
The club still have a number of exciting young players at their disposal, and with a strong backing from the supporters there is no reason why they cannot challenge for an immediate promotion next season.
Di Matteo has experience in the Championship, and he could be afforded time at Villa to clear the decks somewhat and mould his own squad both to get promoted and later stay in the Premier League.
Nigel Pearson and Steve Bruce have also been linked with the Villa post, but Di Matteo allegedly showing an interest in the club could swing the vote in his favour when it comes to making a decision.
