Newcastle United scored five on the final day of the season.
Newcastle United became only the second team in the Premier League to have scored five goals in a match while being reduced to ten men after they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 5-1.
The Magpies headed in to the game knowing that only pride was at stake for them after Sunderland’s midweek victory over Everton condemned their North East rivals to relegation.
Tottenham, on the other hand, still had second place to play for and they knew defeat would likely see them fall behind North London rivals Arsenal who comfortable defeated Aston Villa 4-0.
The game was set up for Spurs to claim a positive result, yet in the end they were humbled 5-1 in an extraordinary game which saw Newcastle score three times after going down to ten men.
As displayed by Opta Stats, the Magpies’ feat matched a rare Premier League record and only adds to the embarrassment suffered by Argentine boss Mauricio Pochettino and his men.
2 - Newcastle v Tottenham is only the 2nd time in PL history that a team has scored 5+ goals in a match when they've had a red card. Spursy.— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) May 15, 2016
Newcastle were 2-1 up when Aleksandar Mitrovic received his marching orders for a horrible tackle on Kyle Walker, yet that only seemed to galvanise the hosts when many expected Spurs to respond.
A penalty from Georginio Wijnaldum regained Newcastle’s two-goal advantage, before Rolando Aarons and Daryl Janmaat completed the rout with two more goals within a 90 seconds of each other.
It leaves a positive spin on what has been a disappointing season for Newcastle, but there are signs there that under Rafa Benitez they have the potential to bounce back to the top-flight in style.
