Southampton defeated Crystal Palace 4-1 at St. Mary’s Stadium.
Club hero Matt Le Tissier has taken to social networking site Twitter in order to revel in Southampton’s 4-1 win over Crystal Palace and ensuing qualification for the Europa League.
The Saints headed into the clash knowing that a win over Palace coupled with a West Ham United defeat at Stoke City would see them pip the Hammers to a top-six spot and European football.
Ronald Koeman’s men have been in excellent form of late, and from the off a comfortable home win never really looked in doubt as they asserted control of the Eagles and dominated the ball.
Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Ryan Bertrand and Steve Davis found the net for the hosts while James Puncheon scored Palace’s goal as the visitors clearly had one eye on the FA Cup final.
Taking to Twitter after the game, Le Tissier was delighted for his former side as he revelled in victory.
Southampton’s win momentarily takes them up to fifth position in the Premier League, ahead of Manchester United on goal difference who saw their game with Bournemouth abandoned before kick-off.
United only need a point against the Cherries to replace the Saints in fifth, yet Koeman’s side will qualify for the Europa League regardless as they enjoy their best ever Premier League points tally.
With proper financial backing this summer, there is no reason why the south coast club cannot go one further next season and challenge for a place in the Champions League.
