Sutton's strong comment when assessing Martinez to Celtic links

Ex-Everton boss Roberto Martinez has been linked with the Celtic post.

Chris Sutton says Celtic appointing Roberto Martinez would be a ridiculous decision as he criticises the Spaniard for doing a poor job with an excellent Everton squad, the Daily Record reports.

Scottish Premiership champions Celtic are currently on the lookout for a new boss following Ronny Deila’s announcement to leave the club at the end of the current season.

David Moyes, Martin O’Neill, Roy Keane and Paul Lambert were just a handful of names to be initially linked, and they have since been joined by the recent departed Everton boss Roberto Martinez.

Martinez certainly has pedigree having won the FA Cup with Wigan Athletic and guiding the Toffees to their best ever Premier League points tally haul, yet Sutton suggests he would be bad for Celtic.

“There is no right or wrong way. You’ve got to know how to get over the line. You win games how you have to. Celtic need a manager who is a realist,” Sutton wrote in his column for the Daily Record.

“We’ve seen Roberto Martinez sacked by Everton this week and I notice he has also been linked with the Celtic job.”

“That would be absolutely ridiculous on the basis that he’s a guy who hasn’t been able to see games through with really good tools at his disposal.”

“I’ve lost count of the number of times they’ve lost leads and the Hoops don’t need that.”

Martinez started ever so brightly at Everton, yet it soon became apparent that his side lacked defensive cohesion and largely through stubbornness the Spanish boss never sought to change his ways.

Celtic are in need of a manger who will bring entertainment back to Celtic Park, yet first and foremost the Bhoys must produce winning football with a manager who knows the club and Scottish football.

With Rangers back in the top-flight, The Hoops will have a bigger challenge next season and making the right choice now could play a huge part in the seasons to come.
