Leeds United fans react on Twitter to Sam Winnall performance

Barnsley Football Club

Leeds made an unsuccessful approach to sign Winnall in January.

Barnsley have one foot in the League One play-off final after comfortably beating Walsall 3-0 at Oakwell yesterday evening.

The game was dominated by the brilliant performance of Barnsley striker Sam Winnall.

The former Scunthorpe United striker scored twice in the game and generally dominated the game throughout with a superb striker display.

Of course Leeds United fans would have been very interested to see just how well The Tykes striker operated.

In January Leeds made a bid of £300,000 to bring Winnall from their Yorkshire rivals. The Yorkshire Evening Post reported that this bid was rejected, with Barnsley wanting over £1 million for his signature.

The YEP reported that Barnsley felt the first offer was derisory and Steve Evans said of the failed move:

“There’s been some insulting comments come out of South Yorkshire about our bid.

“We thought it was in confidence. Nothing to do with the player, he’s a decent player, but I’m not going to talk about him any more. We’ll not be going back for him.”

Yesterday’s two goals took Winnall to a fantastic tally of 24 goals in 54 games this season. Considering the fact Leeds have been short of goals, with Chris Wood battling fitness woes throughout the season, Winnall would have made a brilliant acquisition in the winter.
