Lamine Kone thanks Aston Villa fans

The Sunderland defender paid tribute to Aston Villa fans.

Lamine Kone is fast becoming something of a legend at Sunderland.

The 27-year-old scored twice in the Black Cats' 3-0 win over Everton in midweek which secured their Premier League safety and relegated Newcastle United in the process.

But the Frenchman, a January signing from Lorient, might have done even more to endear himself to Sunderland fans following his recent social media activity.

Arguably the result which cost the Magpies their top-flight status was a disappointing 0-0 draw at Aston Villa last weekend - two massive points dropped in the fight against relegation.

After the game, Villa fans added insult to injury by taunting the visiting supporters with chants of "Sunderland" at them, with Sam Allardyce's side beating Chelsea 3-2 just minutes before to massively boost their survival chances.

Now, Kone has aimed a subtle dig at Sunderland's North-East rivals by thanking Aston Villa fans for the support, along with a video of them truly ripping it out of the Newcastle faithful.

Sunderland round off their season with a trip to Watford, while Newcastle United host Spurs at St James's Park. Villa, meanwhile, visit Arsenal in what could be their final Premier League game for a while unless things are sorted out at the West Midlands club.
