Heung-Min Son was utterly awful for Tottenham v Newcastle

Did Tottenham get it right investing more than £20 million in Heung-Min Son?

Only Erik Lamela came out of Tottenham's loss to Newcastle with any credit after scoring an impressive goal, but the rest of the team disgraced themselves by losing 5-1 to an already relegated side.

The worst of the bunch might just have been Heung-Min Son, who was hooked at half-time by Mauricio Pochettino after barely contributing anything of note.

He managed only 20 touches in 45 minutes, and failed to register a shot at goal, or provide a single cross, creating just one chance.

Son was Tottenham's lowest rated midfielder according to Opta powered website whoscored.com, who gave him a 5.7 out of 10 for his abject performance.

Defensively he offered nothing either, with zero tackles and interceptions combined, committing one foul.

Spurs lost their grip on second place as a result of the loss, with bitter rivals Newcastle leapfrogging them in the table to finish above them for a 21st consecutive year.

Son was a big money summer signing from Bayer Levekusen last summer, with more than £20 million invested to sign him. After a promising start he faded badly, and scored just four goals in 28 Premier League appearances, with just one assist.

It is a paltry return for a player bought to be a game changer, and while there had been promising signs in the last fortnight with goals against Chelsea and Southampton, on Sunday he showed the worst aspects of his game, lost tactically and defensively, and it was no surprise Mauricio Pochettino decided to substitute him.

He faces a big challenge next season to show he has fully adapted to the Premier League, and needs to cut out performances like the one at St James' Park if he is to take his game to the next level.
