Everton midfielder James McCarthy must now be wishing he had joined Tottenham Hotspur for £20m last summer

The Irish midfielder was heavily linked with a White Hart Lane switch in the summer.

This summer saw Tottenham Hotspur heavily linked with a move for Everton midfielder James McCarthy.

The Mirror reported that Spurs were readying a £20 million bid for the player in the summer before the Daily Mail suggested they would offer cash plus Aaron Lennon for his services. The reports went on to suggest that McCarthy wanted the move as he was not being offered a new and improved deal at Goodison Park.

Despite the heavy links from the media in August he put the rumours to bed, signing a new five-year deal on Merseyside.

Hindsight however will probably tell the Ireland international that he made a mistake.

Everton have had a dreadful season, despite two cup semi-finals. They are now managerless and in the bottom-half of the table.

Meanwhile Spurs are a team on the up. They look likely to finish second in the Premier League and will be playing Champions League football next season.

In recent weeks the downturn in fortunes at Everton has even battered the confidence of the usually ever-supreme McCarthy – who has put in some poor performances in Everton blue.

With the future of Everton stars such as Romelu Lukaku and John Stones now in doubt, and the club lacking a manager or European football for next season, McCarthy is probably wishing he made the move to Tottenham in the summer after all.
