Chris Waddle said on BBC Radio 5 live Sport on Thursday evening (May 12) that Tottenham Hotspur need to sign a player who is creative on the flanks.
“I think he (Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino) needs a couple of players definitely to add to the squad,” said former Tottenham star Waddle.
“I think he needs somebody very creative on the flanks. I think Lamela has improved from when he first came, Eriksen has floated in and Dele Alli, but they still need somebody who can get past a couple of players and open the door.”
It is interesting that Waddle thinks that Tottenham need creative players on the flanks, but perhaps that should not be their priority in the summer transfer window.
Erik Lamela can play out on the wing, and he has certainly done well this season. Christian Eriksen is best used down the the middle, but he can play on the wide as well.
Nacer Chadli is a winger, but he has not been able to play regularly for Tottenham this season due to the competition for places.
Son Heung-min can play out wide as well, and he would have contributed more this season had he not suffered with injuries.
As far as the 2016-17 Premier League campaign is concerned, Spurs do not need to make signings in the creative midfield or wing department.
What the North London outfit do need is a striker who can act as back-up to Harry Kane, who is the first choice in that department.
However, given that Spurs will be playing in the Champions League next season, perhaps head coach Mauricio Pochettino could do with signing a winger or attack-minded midfielder in the summer transfer window.
