Wayne Rooney struck twice in the second-half as England claimed a 3-1 victory over Scotland on Tuesday night in front of a raucous Celtic Park.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring just after the half-hour when he nodded home a precise long ball from Jack Wilshere, before the skipper gave the visitors a 2-0 lead early in the second-half after the Scotland defence failed to clear James Milner’s free-kick.

It was not all plain sailing for Roy Hodgson’s side, as Hull City’s Andy Robertson pulled one back for the Tartan Army with seven minutes to go, igniting brief hope of a comeback, but a quick reply from Rooney ensured the Three Lions remain unbeaten north of the border since 1985.

The Manchester United forward now has 46 international goals, after seven strikes in as many games, and is just three away from equalling Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time record of 49.

Gordon Strachan’s Scotland looked somewhat jaded on the night after their efforts in the 1-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over the Republic of Ireland on Friday, but that didn’t stop the home crowd from creating a vibrant atmosphere.
