Joey Barton linked with Rangers, but what has he said about Celtic in the past?

Barton's past tweets might come back to haunt him.

Today has seen Burnley midfielder Joey Barton linked with a move to Rangers, in what would be a switch from England’s second-tier winners to Scotland’s.

It was reported by Sky Sports earlier today that Barton had been at Murray Park today to discuss a potential switch to Ibrox.

So with a potential move to Rangers on the cards, what has Barton said in the past about playing at Rangers’ fierce Old Firm rivals Celtic.

In August last year Barton was still a free agent after his release from QPR and he was asked on Twitter whether he would be interested in a move to Celtic.

To which he responded:

Of course that response was not exactly a ringing endorsement to a move to Celtic, rather of his wish to play in the Old Firm derby – something he could certainly do with Rangers next term.

However, the Rangers target did send out this Tweet in 2014 prior to featuring in a charity match at Celtic Park for a Rio Ferdinand All-Star team:

So perhaps, given the choice, Celtic would be his preferred option between the Old Firm pair, as this Tweet from 2012 would seem to suggest:

Barton has had a brilliant campaign with Burnley, being voted the club’s Player of the Year and in the Championship Team of the Year.

His contract however expires this summer and he is clearly keeping his options open with his visit to Rangers today.
