Burnley midfielder Joey Barton suggested on the Drivetime show on talkSPORT on Thursday evening (broadcast from 4pm, May 12) that Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic would struggle in the Championship.
Newcastle have been relegated from the Premier League and will play in the Championship next season.
“Mitrovic, he doesn’t look the most balanced individual,” said former Newcastle midfielder Barton on the Drivetime show on talkSPORT on Thursday evening (broadcast from 4pm, May 12).
“If I was a centre-half in the Championship, I would be thinking I would love to play against this fellow because there is a little bit more leniency on the physicality in the Championship. If you can get into his ribcage, he could be sent off every match he plays.”
Mitrovic joined Newcastle from Belgian giants Anderlecht in the summer of 2015 and was expected to be a massive success at St. James’ Park.
The 21-year-old has had a rather mixed and inconsistent season, although there have been moments when he has been stunning.
The Serbia international striker has scored eight goals and created 27 chances in 33 Premier League matches for Newcastle this season.
Mitrovic has a pass accuracy of 72% and a shot accuracy of 47%, and has won 75 headers, 16 dribbles and 13 tackles.
The youngster’s temperament has been a problem, as he has been shown four yellow cards and one red in the league.
The Championship is a very hard, competitive and physical league, and Mitrovic will have to be careful next season.
