HITC Sport understands that Boro are keen to bring him back to The Riverside.
Middlesbrough are leading the chase to sign their former star James Morrison, HITC Sport understands.
The 29-year-old attacking midfielder is out-of-contract with West Bromwich Albion this summer, who are keen for him to sign a new long-term deal at The Hawthorns.
However, Boro have already made it known to his representatives that they want him back at the club - where he started his career.
Morrison came through Boro's famed youth academy in the early 2000s before becoming a regular first-teamer under Steve McClaren.
But West Brom are facing a battle to hold onto him with Boro keen for him to re-start his career with them, where he could join former team-mate Stewart Downing - who made a similar move last summer, helping them to promotion to the top-flight.
HITC Sport understands that Boro would see Morrison dropping slightly deeper into a central midfielder role, rather than a forward role he has featured in for much of his career, and the player is understood to be keen on doing that.
Morrison missed the last five months of the season with a ruptured hamstring, but he is now back to fitness and it will not impact on a possible summer switch.
