Premier League veteran Brad Friedel has backed his former club Tottenham Hotspur to retain a Champions League spot next year and to build on a ‘fantastic’ season.
Friedel made 50 appearances for the North London club in a four year stint at the end of his career, leaving only after Hugo Lloris emerged as Pochetinno’s preferred number one, at the ripe old age of 43.
The former Villa and Blackburn man is now a club ambassador for Spurs in the United States, combining that role with his work for the American national team’s Under-19 squad. He frequently appears on US media outlets as a commentator.
And speaking at the Soccerex Americas conference, Friedel backed his former club to repeat their excellent form again next season
“Mauricio Pochettino has done a fantasic job.
“Listen, in the Premier League there is a lot of money there, and a lot of the teams, like a Manchester City, and a Manchester United, a Chelsea, Southampton, Liverpool, they are all going to want to better next year.
“But there is a very strong base with Tottenham and what Mauricio has done, so I think if they continue building on that then I think they will be in that top four again and always a very difficult team to beat.”
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino ended speculation about his future yesterday by signing a new five year contract extension thought to be worth in the region of £25 million, keeping the Argentine at White Hart Lane until 2021.
Pochettino was linked with the Manchester United job as uncertainty continues to haunt Louis van Gaal, with the former Southampton boss photographed with Sir Alex Ferguson after what looked to be a meeting between the pair.
But Spurs have quashed those rumours by securing the future of their talented boss, a move that may probably be their best deal of the summer.
