Stoke City goalkeeper Shay Given said on BBC Radio 5 live Sport on Wednesday evening (May 11) that too many foreign players in the Newcastle United squad is a concern for him.
Former Newcastle goalkeeper Given suggested that too many foreign players in the current squad could be a problem in the Championship.
“It’s a concern for me,” said the former Aston Villa goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 live Sport on Wednesday evening (May 11).
“There are so many foreign players within the camp at the minute. Are they equipped to come straight back up? Possibly not.”
Newcastle do have a squad that is good enough to at least push for a top-four finish in the Premier League, but the players have underperformed this season.
That is the main reason why the Magpies have ended up in the Championship, and the squad will need some overhaul in the summer.
Not all of the current players in the squad would want to play in the Championship, which is very physical and very competitive.
What Newcastle need to do in the summer is carefully evaluable which players are suitable for the second tier of English football.
